Who Doesn’t Love a Pop of Color?

Neon colored makeup reigned gloriously on the Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear runways as one of the most notable makeup trends for Spring/Summer 2011. Christian Dior models donned crave-worthy eye shadows in shades of tangerine orange, lemon lime, and bold, mint green. Over at Diane von Furstenberg, models were dolled up in a pink lip so hot that even Barbie would languish with envy. Vivienne Westwood took the trend to the next level by saturating some of her models’ cheeks with the most marvelous shade of yellow – an absolute must see!

Ultimately fun and fearless, this makeup trend can be worn throughout the summer, and here at Faction, we’ve taken note. For our August issue, we’ll be expressing our love for the colorful trend by shooting some of our models in our own neon interpretation. This summer-loving editorial is going to be all about color, and we hope that all of you can make it out to our release party on August 25 to see the spread for yourselves! Also, feel free to master your neon makeup artistry skills before the event, so you can show off your bold look at the party!

Westport Retailers Invade Faction

Talk to anyone around the Kansas City area, and we’re sure that most people have at least heard of Westport, which is known for its bars and restaurants, trendy scene, and most recently, its retail shops. Westport is becoming the “it” spot for local retailers looking to set up shop in perhaps the most local-friendly place in KC. Many Westport shops have been featured throughout past issues of Faction, and for our August issue, we’re especially crazy about Westport.

The Bunker, whose top pieces are featured in our upcoming issue, opened its doors in 1999 and has become a well-known local favorite. Carrying an array of items from both local designers and national brands, the Bunker caters to young, fashion-forward people looking for fun and unique garbs. Kurt from the Bunker explains, “The Bunker has one foot in fashion and another foot in surf/skate lifestyle… Our customer comes to the Bunker to find something they won't find at the mall.”

In love with the neighborhood’s history and people, Bon Bon Atelier made Westport their home in 2006. What started out as a shop of mostly handmade jewelry, gifts, and décor, Bon Bon has slowly turned into a sewing and crafts superstore ogled by local crafters. The specialty retailer still sells handmade jewelry, though, and is constantly featuring handmade pieces from local designers. For the Shop Westport shoot, Bon Bon sent us some “very personal” pieces designed by the owner Betsy’s sister. Betsy tells us, “The pieces that Faction has are all from her newest line which hasn't even hit the store yet - they are a sneak peek!”

One of the younger shops in Westport, Clothz Minded will be celebrating their first birthday on August 21! A buy, sell, trade shop, Clothz Minded “wanted to be some place where there were more locally owned businesses, some place with character.” Catering to a market of young professionals and families, Nicole from Clothz Minded explains that she prefers to buy classic pieces that she knows her clientele will like. For our August issue, Nicole chose fall pieces that the “everyday person can wear and afford.”

These Westport shops aren’t the only ones nice enough to lend us their clothes. ATC, Colfax, Imagery, Boomerang, Mash Handmade, and Screen Tee Gallery are all featured in our Shop Westport editorial. All of you, and yes, we mean all of you, must make it out to our V10 release party on August 25 to check out the Shop Westport photos for yourself!

Matt Mayfield: Local Photographer Determined to Inspire KC’s Fashion Scene

With multiple national shoots under his belt, Matt Mayfield is one ambitious Kansas City photographer. Aside from the work he has done for Faction V9, Mayfield has had the opportunity to have his work published in Vogue, People, Kansas City Magazine, Office Pro, and Spirit (the in-flight magazine for Southwest Airlines).

Though Mayfield is a self-taught photographer, here at Faction, we think he has been quite successful in the world of fashion photography. Having shot for Fashion Week in New York City, Payless, and a variety of local fashion designers and shows, Mayfield is most certainly a big part of the Kansas City fashion scene. He believes that the talented local designers and models are developing the Kansas City fashion industry from a “fashion oasis” to a “fashion Mecca.”

Mayfield’s’ interest in photography sparked from a unique moment when he was “looking at a bee through a viewfinder and clicking the shutter on an old camera my grandma gave me. The camera wasn't loaded, but it was exciting.” After this brief glimpse into the world of photography, Mayfield was hooked. He spent time photographing his friends playing dress-up, shooting street photography, and taking odd jobs. He bought “equipment here and there,” and eventually put together a portfolio.

With his portfolio and talent, Mayfield was able to land an internship with a commercial photographer where he developed his skills. He worked as an assistant at Hallmark and for photographer Richard McLaren, as well as a couple of photographers from Rolling Stone. Mayfield eventually built up enough clientele to begin freelancing and doing what he loves – “Anything that makes myself and others feel inspired and empowered.”

Mayfield sees Faction as a “driving force in the fashion cultural movement in Kansas City with great talent, photography and design.” We’re happy to have him in our V9 issue, and we’d love for all of you to come out to our release party on June 21^st to take a look at his work!

Tracy McClain: MaCavelli and Trajet

Tracy McClain is an insurance territory manager by day, but her creative outlets far surpass her day job. By night, Tracy keeps herself busy as a jewelry designer, business owner, crafter and remodeler. Faction’s “Day Drifters” and “BoHo Chic” photo shoots feature Tracy’s jewelry lines, MaCavelli and Trajet. Tracy creates jewelry through the use of found vintage pieces mixed with chains and sometimes leather. Her jewelry can be purchased on the Country Club Plaza at Standard and Halls’ Trunk Show May 20^th and 21^st.

Digging deeper into Tracy’s inspiration, we sought to find out how she created the jewelry featured in Faction’s newest issue (V8, coming out on April 27^th, 2011). What was the inspiration for each of these pieces? Which materials were used to construct them? How are some of the main features of the jewelry interchangeable?

Tracy acknowledges the ideas for her pieces come from a variety of places, such as her inspiration for body necklaces seen on a website from California. Because the body necklaces on the site were a little too “bondage looking”, Tracy chose to design her own version with a bit more vintage, feminine edge, allowing it be worn both as a body necklace or, more traditionally, by clasping the waist/hip segment around the neck.

Other pieces of jewelry were from a single piece gifted to Tracy by a friend, who wanted Tracy to make something for herself. Transforming this one necklace into four different pieces, allowed Tracy to “re-gift” one of the pieces back to her friend. Tracy also uses music as a source of inspiration during the jewelry making process. Listening to heavy rock music of the 60s and 70s resulted in a “boho influence” in the necklace transformation.

The third set we featured in v8 was a result of Tracy’s fondness of natural stones and gold meshing together. The fringe of this necklace is a weave from three to four separate pieces with Tracy’s artistic eye deciding the outcome. She said,“The agate piece needed a little bling, so I added a vintage diamond cut chain. I love that you can wear it long, layer it or double the chain up for a shorter necklace.”

Her fourth piece was inspired by what she calls her “Rocker within”, so adding leather to the pendant was a necessary addition. Tracy chose light leather to keep with the Bohemian theme, added stones to the eyes to give the owl needed “Pop”, and she finished by fixing vintage pieces on both sides.

We think pairing layered jewelry, like Tracy’s, with the recent popularity of layering clothing with sequins and shiny jewelry on sheer fabrics will be the hot style for Summer 2011. We hope Kansas City will embrace this trend, displaying assorted jewelry over sheer summer dresses and tops. This subtle flash of sexiness can make any outfit appealing, whether going out on the town or staying in during cool summer evenings.

Nationally-recognized fashion expert, Jenn Falik, agrees. She suggests the layering of “long necklaces to accessorize in the most flattering way possible. They create a line that draws the eye vertically, giving the illusion of a longer torso - a very slimming effect.”

With the summer season starting, we encourage readers to be imaginative with their wardrobe, dig through their closets, and search those blogs for new inspiration. Layering your clothing and using different jewelry will make your creativity thrive. In summer fashion it is about having no set rules, being creative, and more importantly layering it up.

ATC Anniversary

Happy Anniversary ATC!

Arizona Trading Company, a buy/sell/trade clothing company, has been featured in many issues of Faction Magazine. On May 1^st , ATC will celebrate the 13th anniversary of the opening of their store prominently located in Kansas City's Westport entertainment district. The Lawrence, KS location on Massachusetts Street will have a birthday this year in December. Each location has its own look and feel, inspiring visitors with great ideas on how to transform their wardrobe. We at Faction always find ourselves fascinated and inspired by ATC's visual displays!

We spoke with Venus Starr, General Manager/Head Buyer of their Westport store, to get the scoop. Despite the job requirement of having to deal with “boring paper work” as General Manager, Venus has a passion for moving inventory and creating a fun environment for her employees and customers. Her daily inspiration comes from national magazines such as “Nylon”, and taking note of other people's attire. Venus takes delight in seeing how different personalities evolve in people based on what they are wearing.

As a note for those who are spring cleaning, ATC is currently buying and taking trade-ins for Spring and Summer wear. Venus has observed current trends leaning toward a lot of lighter denim than ATC has seen in the past. "We are always looking for skinny jeans, bell bottoms, and denim shorts" says Venus, “and boot-cut denim for men is selling well for us right now.” Other hot trends moving well, are floral prints, mod patterns, clothing in the peach and cream color family, long thin t-shirts and men's vintage cowboy shirts.

Faction Magazine featured Sarah Nelsen's designs in "Faction Magazine V5 Issue" where we also added her as a contributor. She is also responsible for the graphic elements in the recent spread "Alabaster Sirens" in "Faction Magazine V7 Anniversary Issue". This girl does it all and to top it off, she just got named winner of "Master Mind - Fashion & Design" by The Pitch for 2011.

We are very proud to be working with her and we can't wait to see what she does next!

Inspiration from a Costume Designer

Some may wonder what it takes, and specifically how one gets successfully involved in the fashion industry? Faction Magazine recently had the pleasure of interviewing Erica Sword, the costume designer for Quixotic Fusion, who led us through her journey of experiences in fashion. Initially, Erica had the full intention of becoming a fiber artist after graduating from the Kansas City Art Institute with her BFA, but over time her work evolved into costume. Her next step was graduate school at UMKC in the theater department; after earning her masters she started teaching at the University of Central Missouri. While at UCM she met Daniel Parks, which led to her involvement with Quixotic Fusion. The pairing was a fantastic fit for both parties involved. Erica's interest in costuming for a circus complemented Quixotic's penchant for brilliant costume. Most individuals that work in costuming generally go the direction of television, opera, or theater. However, Erica always had the desire to "run away with the circus", which probably started when she had a summer experience with Feld Entertainment, the parent company to Ringling Brothers.

Erica's design inspiration comes mainly from nature, fashion history, and architecture. Continuing her career, Erica hopes to cement her affiliation as the resident costume designer for Quixotic into a full partnership. Expanding into the circus arts community is a huge opportunity to make fabulously beautiful costumes. Erica explains, "Many people might say I’m lucky to earn a living doing what I love to do and working in the arts, the truth is, in order to be truly successful you must be disciplined and work everyday to refine your chosen craft". She couldn't have said it any better!

A Chat with Susan Mayer of 74 Harley Street

Bio: Susan is a Kansas City based jewelry designer and busy mother to four boys. She repurposes beautiful or very unique (but old-fashioned or even partially damaged) vintage jewelry into modern, wearable pieces with a nostalgic soul. Her company, 74 Harley Street, was named for the address of her flat when she lived in London. Susan also does custom jewelry, updating family heirlooms, thrift-shop finds or creating personal pieces for brides. Faction Magazine: You have 4 boys, how do you even have time for a jewelry business?

Susan Mayer: Obviously, my days are too busy to sit and work, but when the house is quiet, usually after bedtime, I get out all of my goodies and get to work. It usually takes me a couple of hours of piddling around until the creative juices flow. I love it, so I enjoy the time (aka, the late nights) I spend on it.

FM: What are your inspirations for making your pieces?

SM: I get inspiration everywhere, especially out when I'm shopping for pieces. I see a piece and I either know right away what I want to do with it, or I hold onto it for months before it hits me. My mom's got a great eye and we collaborate a lot.

FM: Have you always had a passion for found objects/vintage pieces?

SM: I've always been sentimental about stuff in general; anything my family gave me, I kept and cherished. It's like these things have soul. And that's how I feel about these vintage jewelry pieces. They have a story, a history. They have soul and their wear shows it. I've always had a passion for jewelry, love the classic and statement pieces, but I try to stay outside of the trendy. The two (passions) have finally crossed paths, it's great!

FM: What area of work were you in before starting 74 Harley Street?

SM: My professional background was in marketing. It's what took me abroad to London. Since then, it's kids - 4 boys keep me very busy!

FM: I know you used to live in London, what did you do there?

SM: What didn't I do there? Jewelry...boy, if I did then what I do now, just imagine the goodies I could've picked up! I was living in Chicago and working at a marketing agency. I transferred to the London office. Lived at 74 Harley Street. After several years, I had my first son there and realized I wanted to be a full-time mom and move closer to family

FM: When did start 74 Harley Street and what goals do you have for your business?

SM: 74 Harley Street started several years ago as a creative endeavor on a different level. And then I took a break to be a mom. I felt like I had a point of view I could translate into jewelry and I love creating something that I can wear and enjoy! I've gotten a great response and that feeds my creativity. I'm currently in several boutiques in KC and I hope to continue to grow the business and expand regionally. Stay tuned!

FM: How would you describe your work to someone who has never seen it?

SM: I design jewelry with vintage pieces - I love to add my own voice to these gorgeous old pieces, most of which aren't necessarily fashionable now the way they were intended to be worn. I give them new life and make them fun to wear. Plus, my stuff works day to night...great with a tee and jeans or dressed up for a party or gala. So fun!

Working on a video is something I have always wanted to and with this issue of Faction Magazine, being released on August 29^th, I had my chance. Faction Magazine and Outpost Worldwide worked some long, hard hours putting together a music video for the Roman Numerals’ song “This Motion”. I, along with Kristen Chumley my intern, was responsible for all the styling of the video which included creation of costumes, the clothing for the band, hair and make-up. I thought it would be interesting to talk to some of the people that made it all possible and see why they wanted to participate in the creation of the video.

CS/FM: What inspired the idea for this project?
BH/OW: This most definitely was inspired from many, many a night enjoying the sounds of the Roman Numerals as well as being a big supporter of the local music and arts community. When I heard there was a call out from the Roman Numerals to visual artist, I for sure came lurking around with interest. These guys have put so much into an aspect of the culture/counter-culture here in Kansas City that I gladly find myself participating in often. It is killer to be able to offer something back to the cause.

CS/FM: What are the pluses of working with Faction Magazine?

BH/OW: Faction brought a very high level of energy & resources into this project.

Their support and participation truly enhanced the life, spirit and style of this film.

The day I teamed up with Faction, they instantly proved to have an uncontrolled fire for what they do.

CS/FM: What are your thoughts on how everyone pulled together for the production?

BH/OW: Upon speaking with Faction about this philanthropic effort, there was instantly a synergy between myself & Faction. They brought the highest sense of attention to the idea and script while bringing their own creative ideas that benefited the entire creative process.

This project was done in a timeframe that was wicked fast, compared to the typical production schedule, without compromise. They were integral in splattering a thought from my mind onto the screen.

CS/FM: What do you think about creative outlets in Kansas City? Do you think people are approachable when it comes to working, promoting and helping one another in the art community?

BH/OW: I have always felt like the reason I’ve enjoyed and appreciated Kansas City so much is due to its energy and spirit. I have never lived in a city that holds such a unique support system within its arts community. This project is all about being a part of the community, working with like-minded people and promoting something bigger than just ourselves.

CS/FM: Why did you want to work on this project?
TS: I wanted to work on this project for the opportunity to work with my friends in the Roman Numerals and the chance to work with Brian Hicks.

CS/FM: Have you ever worked on a project like this before?
TS: Not really, a very small bit part in Alacartoona's Night is the Mirror (where I first very briefly worked with Brian) and a very quick and dirty, no budget, make it up as you go video with my partner in (the) Medicine Theory for our song “I Killed Amanda”, which features both Erin McGrane and Christian Hankel of Alacartoona.

CS/FM: What intrigued you about this project?
TS: There were two aspects that really jumped out; one was the very vivid, lurid, and fluid imagery Brian was describing in our first meeting. I was able to latch on pretty quick and begin to conceptualize the world he was creating. The second was the very “non-band video” approach. No lip-synching, posturing or faux performance footage. And I don't know if it "intrigued" me into want to work on the project, but the song is just fucking awesome.

CS/FM: What school do you go to? When do you graduate? What is your major?

KC: I go to Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. I graduate May 2011 with a major in Fashion Communications.

CS/FM: What is your dream job?

KC: I would love to do trend forecasting or styling. Traveling and analyzing street fashion and figuring out what trends will pick up and what won't sounds amazing to me. I would also love to style photo shoots for a magazine or some other media outlet. Working at Nylon magazine would be a dream come true. Styling a TV show or movie would be awesome. I also love getting people ready, so if there was some way I could do someone's hair and makeup and help them pick out an outfit to wear, that would be great. I want to be exposed to the fashion industry as much as possible so I can figure out what I'm good at and what I should focus on career wise. I want a job where I can work with creative people and beautiful fashion.

CS/FM: Do you have any plans when you graduate?

KC: Life after graduation is an open book for me. I want to move to New York with some Stephen’s girls but that's up in the air. After staying in Kansas City this summer, there is a part of me that would like to stay and try to help out the fashion scene here as much as I can. I've met so many amazing people trying to do so much for this city and I want to be a part of that. I'm going to see how my last year goes before I make any solid plans.

CS/FM: Describe how it has been working on Faction projects.

KC: Working on Faction projects has been so awesome. I've gotten to be a part of real photo shoots, not just stuff that my friends and I do together. I got to help style a music video which is huge. I've gotten to experience first-hand what the fashion scene is like in Kansas City. I've met an entirely new group of people and made some great connections. Working on Faction projects also made me realize that I really have been taught a lot in school. A lot of the skills I learned at Stephens have really come in handy. From patternmaking and sewing to fashion illustration and communication, I've realized I wouldn't have been prepared for this internship if I hadn't been at Stephens. I'm happy that I'm getting my Fashion Communications degree and motivated to learn as much as I can before I graduate.

CS/FM: Describe your final project for your summer internship.

KC: My final project for my summer internship was focused on styling a music video for Roman Numerals. I did research and compiled concept sheets. I sketched out designs for the outfits used in the video, sourced materials for the garments and constructed them. I sourced shoes to use in the video. I helped out during the two days of shooting. This project let me see first-hand what all goes into both a photo shoot and a music video. It was so neat to be on set and see stuff that I worked on being filmed.

CS/FM: What was your favorite part of the Faction V4 Music Issue?

KC: I loved the photo shoot on the set of the Roman Numerals music video. It was awesome to get stylish photo documentation of so many creative things happening at once. The hair, makeup and garments used for the shoot and video were awesome. It was so great to see how everything came together.

CS/FM: After spending the summer in Kansas City, what are your thoughts regarding the fashion community here?

KC: I think that there are a lot of people in the Kansas City fashion scene that have a lot to offer. Fashion here isn't nearly as big as on the coasts, but it is still evident. The scene is growing and becoming bigger and better. There is a unique creative community here and it has a voice that needs to be heard.

Local Fashion, Photography and Roman Numeral Video Debut

WearHaus and Jeff Evrard Photography are excited to present the fourth issue of their magazine, Faction, at a release party on Sunday, August 29th. Record Bar, in Westport (1020 Westport Road, KCMO, 64111), will host the event from 7pm-12am. The party will feature 250 copies of the fourth issue of the magazine, which features local musicians, as well as back copies of Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3, while supplies last. The celebration will feature DJ sets by Billy Smith, Steve Tulipana and Wade Williamson as well as live performances by Olympic Size and Roman Numerals. Brian Hicks of Outpost Worldwide will be debuting the new Roman Numeral’s video. This fashionable music event is open to the public and all ages from 7-10pm. Admittance is $7 and includes Faction Magazine V4!

Faction Magazine V4 combines several disciplines from many talented Kansas Citians. Faction Producers, Carman Stalker and Jeff Evrard, worked closely with video producer Brian Hicks to make his dark, lurid vision for the video a reality. Local artist Tyson Schroeder created specific art pieces for the project and also stars in the Roman Numeral’s video of their song “This Motion”. While shooting the music video, Faction not only photographed a spread for the magazine but also was responsible for the costuming for the production. Olympic Size is also a featured band in the magazine with an exciting “junk yard” spread that is sure to be unique.

Faction is a creative collaboration between Jeff Evrard of Jeff Evrard Photography and Carman Stalker of WearHaus. Faction centers on Kansas City fashion using local models, stylists, locations, clothing and hair and make-up professionals. The magazine is a bi-monthly publication focused on fashion photography and imagination. There is no written content in the zine but rather on the Faction Blog. The zine also features a back page advertising section for businesses that wish to take part in inexpensive marketing. Faction not only gives Evrard and Stalker a creative outlet, but also enables other locals to participate.

Come celebrate with the contributors of Faction Magazine Volume 4 including Carman Stalker, Jeff Evrard, Brian Hicks, Tyson Schroeder, Forester Michael, Outpost Worldwide, Roman Numerals, Olympic Size, TOMBOY design studio and Halls Crown Center as they release Faction Magazine Volume 4 at Record Bar on Sunday August 29^th from 7pm-12am. They are all very excited to work together to provide the public a unique event featuring great local music, fashion, art and fun!
